Schools (and registered childcare providers) in England and Wales are required “to ensure children are safe from terrorist and extremist material when accessing the internet in school, including by establishing appropriate levels of filtering”. Furthermore, they are expected to “assess the risk of [their] children being drawn into terrorism, including support for extremist ideas that are part of terrorist ideology”.
To help them assess their wider online safety policy and practice, schools can undertake a self-review – using a resource such as www.360safe.org.uk – to highlight any gaps or areas where provision could be improved.
As part of this process, the UK Safer Internet Centre invited filtering and monitoring providers, such as NetSupport, to illustrate to schools how their technology meets the national standards. Our checklist has now been published and is available online.
